Misc pictures of our travels

We spent some time in Hsinchu, home of the famous science park, the Silicon Valley of Taiwan. We were there during the elections and the locals set off fireworks late into the night near our hotel. A rock band played in the middle of a roundabout on election night. Though the guidebooks aren't high on Hsinchu we had a good time. Also attended a Super Basketball League game. Each Taiwanese team can have one foreigner. Most have an American who played Div I or II basketball. Some have previously played in Europe. The teams are corporate-owned. Taiwan Beer sponsors a team.

Photoshopped ID picture

I had to get some head shots for my campus ID and a driver's license. This is the picture I received from the portrait photographer. I've heard Taiwan is famous for its wedding pictures and that mainland Chinese come over to get their pictures taken. Though they took out some of my eyebrows and all the wrinkles I shouldn't complain. I received 16 pictures plus the digitized image on a disc for $10. Walgreen's charges $8 for one image.

Funny things

There are all sorts of great car names here. The Toyota "Saloon" is one example. I have also seen the Toyota "Wish" a good sized station wagon not available in the US.

Children's School Pictures

Here are some pictures of Antonio and Cristina's school. Dengkong Primary in Danshui is quite big--multistory and modern--much different than Atwater in Shorewood. The morning drop off includes many parents and children on scooters. The kids have two uniforms. This is the one they wear on days when they have PE. Note the hats! They play table tennis after school most days.

Here are pictures showing my office and the view from my 9th story window. In the foreground are the tennis courts; in the background is Bali across the Danshui River. Photographs of Tamkang University

Here are some photographs of the campus. We live right in the middle of Tamkang University in Danshui, a "suburb" of Taipei. Unlike American suburbs, Danshui is a city of high rises. Anyway, here are some shots of the campus. This is where we live. We have two one-room apartments in the faculty housing building called "Huei Wen Hall." The photos show the front and back of our building. The rear includes several small food stands where students buy meals and sit at the picnic tables under the trees. The tennis courts are located across from our apartments. This small garden is another beautiful spot on campus near our apartments.
